The canteen as well as the cafe sell the same food with extremely low nutritional value every day, but not only low in nutrition; foods that are even well known to be converted into cancer-causing compounds once in the body such as highly processed meats (sausages, bacon, etc - a considerable proportion of the small variety of food sold everyday at the college). In my 'joining instructions' email before my 2nd year here, it told us to bring a drink but "not energy drinks as these will dehydrate you", and yet the college have vending machines full of incredibly unhealthy energy drinks that they happily sell and promote to teenagers, with MASSIVE "COKE" branding over the machines portraying a crazy fantasy that this stuff is normal to be drinking all the time.
Other than preparing a lunch that we bring with us to college, there are very few options for us other than to engage in an unhealthy way of living: eating destructive foods, and then sitting down for hours in lectures. As well as this being physically unhealthy, it’s also mentally; I’ve noticed that food directly impacts the way I think, learn and behave, and to learn effectively I find that eating the sort of food sold at college dramatically drags me down.
I'm told that students with bursaries are given £5 a day to buy food with from the college, which leads me to believe that this is also seen as a normal amount of money for someone to pay for food with themselves. At my previous school, our lunches costed £5 too, and yet they were good quality healthy meals, showing me that there is no excuse (such as that you have to be able to provide meals for £5 or less, and that healthier foods are generally more expensive) to provide healthy meals for us students.
For an institution that is educating and inspiring the next generation of humanity, I strongly believe that it is vitally important to promote healthy living habits, rather than destructive ones.

This is so true
I completely agree with this, the canteen needs more healthier options as well as a few vegan ones too. This would bring more people into the canteen!
Some brilliant points here, hopefully myself and other members of the student executive will be able to look into this at our next meeting in December!
